Human Structures (San Francisco), 36 feet tall, galvanized and painted steel
Permanent installation, 555 Mission Street, San Francisco, 2008
Human Structures (San Francisco) is composed of 62 painted steel figures, interconnecting to form 5 cylindrical towers. Each of the 62 life-size figures is water-jet cut from steel plate, and then each is given its structural folds. Before painting, the figures are galvanized, followed by an epoxy primer, and finally a coating of catalyzed urethane color. 12 pre-coded colors are used, including seven figures remaining in their primal, shiny, galvanized state. The 62 figures are bolted together hand-to-hand and head-to-toe with a series of multicolored connector plates.
